Halloween burlesque show by the collective Project Burlesque, a celebration of sensual dance and radical body liberation.
Project Burlesque returns to The Alberta Rose Theatre on Sunday, Oct 18, for a Halloween show titled The Burlesque Witch Project. It's their first Portland appearance since a sold-out run at Chapel Theater back in February, and this time they're bringing the whole thing to the Alberta Arts District.
Project Burlesque is a non-hierarchical collective that frames sensuality as resistance and pleasure as power, and they describe their work as a way of defying patriarchal, capitalist, and heteronormative control. The February run was called a spellbinding celebration of sensual dance, radical body liberation, and bewitching performance, and that's the same energy they're bringing to the Rose for this Halloween edition.
The venue itself is a good fit for a night like this. The Alberta Rose opened as a motion picture house in 1927 and has spent more than 80 years as a seated listening room for music, comedy, circus, film, and live performance. It holds 300 fixed seats on a slightly sloped floor and keeps the serene feel of a Spanish-Colonial courtyard, with a full bar and local snacks, including vegetarian and gluten-free empanadas from El Pilรณn. Most shows here are 21 and over only, and the space is wheelchair accessible.
