Electronic music night featuring MSHR, The Tenses, and DJ The Garbage Man at Holocene.
MSHR headline an early show at Holocene on Friday, October 9, with The Tenses and DJ The Garbage Man on the bill. It's a 21+ night, and the doors open at 5 PM.
MSHR is a Portland art collective founded in 2011 by Brenna Murphy and Birch Cooper as an offshoot of the Oregon Painting Society. They build sculptural electronic systems that weave electrical signals and human presence into audiovisual environments, so it's as much about the objects they bring into the room as the sound they make.
The Tenses are a duo of Ju Suk Reet Meate and Jackie Oblivia, both core members of the legendary group Smegma, which dates back to 1973, and veterans of the Los Angeles Free Music Society. They formed as a duo in 2008 and play with a room-responsive sound, pulling from record players, lap steel guitar, pocket trumpet, electronics and toys. Their name comes from a story in the 1964 book The Dream World of Dion McGregor, which transcribes tales told while asleep.

Rounding out the night is Liz Harris of Grouper, who DJs as The Garbage Man. She spins scavenged mash-ups of obscure pop, classical, noise and field recordings on vinyl and cassette. Holocene is a venue, nightclub and events space in the core of Portland that hosts touring acts, local musicians and all manner of arts.
Doors open at 5 PM; tickets are $23.06.
