A buoyant comedy by Dan Kitrosser about Marsha, a Jewish lesbian, and her sister Janice, exploring family dynamics and the power of connection.
Marsha Blovotnik and the Marvelous Magical Chicken Soup opens at Artists Repertory Theatre on October 27, running through November 22. It's a comedy by Dan Kitrosser, directed by Luan Schooler, and it's one of three comedies by Pacific Northwest playwrights announced for the theater's 44th season (2026/27), alongside Slay and Eulogy, or How to Plan Your Own Funeral.
The play follows Marsha Blovotnik, a Leftie Jewish Lesbian who is absolutely furious at her sister, Janice, for showing up three minutes early to Shabbos dinner. Just before Janice arrives, a mysterious ancestor hands Marsha a pot of magical chicken soup with the power to cure the world of its woesβon the condition that she cools down enough to share a bowl with her sister. It's described as a buoyant, crackling comedy about how to live in a dumpster fire.
Maria Porter takes the title role of Marsha, with Robin McAlpine as Janice. Maeve Stier plays the chorus and musician, and Adam John Roper handles multiple roles: Jonathan, a very old Jewish relative, and Marsha's father. Miriam Schwartz plays Lilith and another Jewish relative. There is a content warning for discussion of death, specifically AIDS.
