The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, led by Wynton Marsalis, performs big band jazz at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall as part of the Oregon Symphony's Special Concerts series.
The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra is coming to the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall on Tuesday, February 16, 2027, at 7:30 PM. The ensemble is led by Wynton Marsalis, who serves as music director and plays trumpet. The Portland stop is part of the Oregon Symphony's Special Concerts series, and it's eligible for the Choose Your Own Series here in town; the symphony itself doesn't perform, so the orchestra is the only act on the bill.
Founded in 1988, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra is billed as the world's premier big band. They tour the world with a repertoire that ranges from historic and rare compositions to commissioned works, with arrangements drawing on Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Fletcher Henderson, Thelonious Monk, Mary Lou Williams, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Goodman, and Charles Mingus, alongside new music from the orchestra's own collection of composers and arrangers. Marsalis, a Pulitzer Prize-winning trumpeter, bandleader, and composer, has been at the helm since the start.
This particular tour carries some extra weight: the concert is part of Marsalis' final season as artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center and music director of the orchestra, after 35 years of touring with the ensemble. It's a bit of a milestone for anyone who's followed his work with the group, so this is one of the last chances to see him leading them from the stage.
