NW Dance Project presents Fall Frontiers, featuring two world premieres and the return of The Other Half of We, as part of ADX Fest.
NW Dance Project brings Fall Frontiers to Newmark Theatre on October 23 and 24, two nights of dance that lean heavily on new work. The bill features two world premieres—one by Ihsan Rustem and another by choreographer Akira Uchida—alongside the return of The Other Half of We, a cinematic duet by the company's artistic director, Sarah Slipper.
The Other Half of We premiered in 2023 and takes its cue from Edward Albee's Marriage Play, following a couple caught in a cycle of dysfunction. It's the older piece of the night, and it shares the stage with the two premieres, so you'll see a mix of work the company has been sitting with and pieces that are making their first public appearance.
Fall Frontiers is part of NW Dance Project's 23rd season, and the company describes its mission as "MOVE DANCE FORWARD" through the creation of new work. That's a good way to frame what you're seeing here: a company that focuses on making new pieces rather than relying on a set repertoire. The double bill is also part of ADX Fest, a region-wide celebration of Art, Design and the Xchange that activates venues and spaces across the Portland region throughout October.
