A community volunteer day at Laurelhurst Park where participants help maintain the park's flora, suitable for all ages with adult supervision for children.
Laurelhurst Park is hosting its end-of-season community volunteer day on Wednesday, October 14, from 9 AM to 12 PM. It's the final session of a monthly series that Portland Parks & Recreation runs with the Friends of Laurelhurst Park, which has been going since April. The whole point is to keep the park's flora healthy and sustained, so if you've spent any time in the park this year, this is a chance to put some work back into it.
One of the best things about these days is how low-barrier they are. They run drop-in style, so you don't need any prior experience and there's no sign-up required. The work is open to all skills, paces, and abilities, and anyone 16 and younger just needs to be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult. If you're worried about the logistics, the park has ADA-accessible restrooms on site. It's the kind of thing you can just show up to on a Wednesday morning and get your hands dirty for a few hours.
Beyond the day itself, the Friends of Laurelhurst Park are looking for new volunteers to take on organizing and leadership roles within the group. If you've been coming to these sessions and want to get more involved in how the park is cared for, that's where to start. It's a good way to move from just showing up to actually helping shape what happens there.
