21+ live show by the five-piece krautrock and art rock band Diles Que No Me Maten from Mexico City at Show Bar in Southeast Portland.
Diles Que No Me Maten play Show Bar on Sunday, October 18, at 8 PM. The Mexico City five-piece brings their blend of krautrock and art rock to the smaller room inside Revolution Hall, 1300 SE Stark in Southeast Portland.
They're touring their fourth album, Escrito en Agua (Writ in Water), which they recorded in a makeshift studio in Santa María La Ribera with producer Sebastián Rojas. The record pulls from a wide range of sources: the funerary music of Oaxaca's Sierra Mixe, the poetry of José Vicente Anaya and Mahmoud Darwish, and the Argentine songwriter Luis Alberto Spinetta. It's the latest in a steady run of releases that started with their 2020 debut EP, Cayó de su Gloria el Diablo, followed by the LP Edificio, and then the breakout La Vida de Alguien Más and Obrigaggi.
The band was founded in 2017 by brothers Raúl Ponce on drums and Gerardo Ponce on guitar, who built the project around a shared improvisational language and a jam-based, krautrock philosophy. Their sound mixes wiry art rock with bluesy balladry and poetic mysticism, with the Ponces joined by Andrés Lupone on bass, Jerónimo Elizondo-García on guitar and clarinet, and Jonás Derbez on vocals and saxophone. That lineup—drums, guitar, bass, a second guitar that doubles on clarinet, and a vocalist who also plays saxophone—gives them a lot of room to move between those art rock and bluesy styles.
