A live concert featuring Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek with Thee Marloes, blending Anatolian folk music with psychedelic rock influences.
Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek play the Star Theater on Tuesday, October 13, with Thee Marloes opening. It's a double bill that brings together two acts on the same ticket.
Yıldırım's music starts with Anatolian folk standards, and she's known for reworking them with a slow psychedelic twist and her own hypnotic vocals. One of the songs she brings forward is "Hop Bico," a tune her grandmother used to sing. She's open about her approach, too: she says that if you play an old folk song, you have to contribute something new. That's the core of what she does—taking these old standards and pulling them into the 21st century.
Her background explains where the sound comes from. Born in Hamburg to Turkish parents, she grew up between her family's Anatolian roots and the many cultures of the city. Her musical path began at home, playing folk songs with family; her father pushed her to learn a string of instruments, starting with the bağlama, a seven-stringed Turkish lute, and later the guitar, piano, and saxophone. That mix of family tradition and a wide range of instruments is what she carries into her work now.
