Conversational Lube is coming to Al's Den on Friday, November 27, from 7 PM to 9 PM. It's a live comedy dating show, and the format is pretty straightforward: single audience members who've never met are paired up and brought on stage. Once they're up there, a comedian joins them as the 'lube'—the person whose job it is to keep the conversation moving, steer it toward the entertaining parts, and lean into any weird moments that crop up along the way.
That role falls to Cait Chock, a stand-up comedian and writer who frames herself as a lost cause and plays matchmaker with her conversational skills. She's the one running the show, and she also runs the project's Instagram at @conversationallube. The whole thing lasts about two hours and is for ages 21 and over.
The venue fits the mood. Al's Den is Portland's original speakeasy-style hideout, a below-street space where live music and comedy feel a little secret even when the place is packed. It's located at McMenamins Al's Den & Ringlers Annex, 303 SW 12th Ave, Portland, OR 97205.
