A birthday celebration for Bobby Weir featuring live music from Family Mystic, blending funk, soul, psych rock and americana.
Bobby Weir is celebrating his birthday at the White Eagle Saloon on Saturday, October 17, playing with Family Mystic. It's a birthday show, so the night is built around the occasion.
Family Mystic is the band Weir's been working with, and their sound pulls from a few different places at once: funk, soul, psych rock, and americana. It's a wide net, and that's a good way to describe itβyou'll hear the groove of the funk and soul side sitting next to the more open, psychedelic rock and the rootsy lean of the americana. It's a mix that fits the room.
That room is the White Eagle Saloon & Rock 'n' Roll Hotel, one of Portland's oldest bars. It's in North Portland's industrial district, a block from the MAX Yellow Line. The place is a local legend, known for a nightly live music tradition and for the kinds of stories that get traded around it: record-breaking tequila consumption, ladies of the evening, Shanghai tunnels, and paranormal residents. The original oak back-bar and ceramic-tiled floors are still there, and giants of rock and blues have played its corner stage for decades. It's part of the McMenamins chain, and they serve Northwest-style pub fare made onsite, including pizza and soups.
