A special 35mm screening of David Lynch's 'Blue Velvet' presented by Fresh Cut Flowers and PAM CUT, with wine and music, as part of the 'Night Blooming Jasmine' programme.
Portland Art Museum is screening David Lynch's Blue Velvet (1986) on 35mm on Saturday, October 17, from 5 PM to 7 PM in the Whitsell Auditorium. The screening is presented by Fresh Cut Flowers and PAM CUT, and it's part of Night Blooming Jasmine, a weekend-long program of Lynch films. There'll be wine by Post Familiar and music on the bill, too.
Blue Velvet is Lynch's neo-noir thriller, a two-hour R-rated film that digs into the dark underbelly of Americana and suburbia, peeling back the rosy veneer of small-town life to show what's hiding underneath. Seeing it on 35mm is a different experience than a digital stream—the film runs through a projector rather than off a hard drive, and that's exactly how it was meant to be seen.
The pairing here is an interesting one. Fresh Cut Flowers is a Portland-based contemporary lifestyle and floral studio founded by Trey Hales and Cody Shulund, with a store inside Machus on SW Alder Street and more than 25 events a year across Portland, New York, and Los Angeles. They describe the collaboration as a celebration of the intersection of nature, beauty, mystery, and the surreal, drawing on Lynch's visual language and his knack for finding the strange within the everyday—sensibilities they say align closely with their own work.
