The Wonder of Stevie

The Wonder of Stevie are playing The Quad Theatre at Plymouth Marjon University on Friday 11 September, a celebration of Stevie Wonder that looks across his whole career. It's a six-piece band led by vocalist Noel McCalla and saxophonist Derek Nash, and they've been playing this together for nearly nine years.

The set draws from a wide-ranging back catalogue, with a good chunk of it coming from the 1970s. They'll be pulling from Talking Book, Innervisions, Songs in the Key of Life and Hotter than July, so you'll hear the dance-floor classics like 'I Wish' and 'Superstition' alongside arrangements of 'My Cherie Amour' and 'Overjoyed'. They also include Wonder's compositions that became hits for other artists, so it's not just the songs he sang himself.

There's a fair bit of professional weight behind the two leading the show. Derek Nash spent years with Jools Holland's Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, and Noel McCalla has worked with Manfred Mann's Earth Band. The two of them reunited to play a Stevie Wonder tune, and that one song grew into a full project they've been touring for almost a decade. Around them is a full band: Neil Angilley on keys, Nic France on drums, Jonathan Noyce on bass and Tim Cansfield on guitar.
