High-energy world-fusion band blending Afro-Latin rhythms, reggae, cumbia and conscious roots music.
The Soul Fire Project play 62 Ebrington Street on Friday 10 July, from 20:00 to 23:00. They're a world-fusion band that pulls together Afro-Latin rhythms, reggae, cumbia and conscious roots music, so the set moves across a few different sounds rather than sticking to one.
There's a fair bit of history behind the name. The band grew out of sixteen years of independent touring across Latin America and Europe, and they did it aboard a school bus powered by vegetable oil and solar energy. That's a long time on the road, and it's where the mix of styles comes from — the cumbia and Afro-Latin rhythms they've picked up along the way. They describe their work as invoking unity, sustainability, liberation and truth, and they do it with multilingual vocals and performances they call deeply participatory, so it's the kind of gig where you're meant to get involved rather than just watch from the back.
This particular tour is part of their current creative chapter, Di La Verdad ('Speak the Truth'). They say it draws on conviction, ruthless honesty, resistance and authenticity, and they root it in consciousness, collective expression and high-energy performance. That's the same energy they bring to the stage: the Afro-Latin rhythms and reggae grooves are the foundation, and the multilingual vocals sit on top of them.
