A talk by painter Louise Courtnell on Robert Lenkiewicz and his tonal approach to painting, drawing on personal and professional experiences.
Louise Courtnell is speaking at The Plymouth Proprietary Library on Wednesday 28 October, with the talk starting at 2pm. She's a painter, and the subject is Robert Lenkiewicz, the South West artist who worked in 'Projects' — large-scale exhibitions that paired his paintings with research notes on sociological issues. His subject matter ran the length of the margins of society: vagrancy, mental handicap, old age, suicide, and death. He set out to illuminate the lives of those he called 'the invisible people', a mission carried on by The Lenkiewicz Foundation.
What makes this talk personal as well as professional is the connection between the two women. Courtnell first met Lenkiewicz in 1987, and she draws on the painting lessons he gave her and on how they've shaped her work ever since. It's a look at his tonal approach to painting from someone who actually sat under his tuition, rather than just a retrospective from a distance.
