Summer Holiday Cinema: Shrek (U)

Plymouth Arts Cinema is bringing Shrek back to the big screen this summer as part of its Summer Holiday Cinema programme. It's the 2001 classic directed by Andrew Adamson, with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and John Lithgow on the voice cast. It runs for 90 minutes, so it's a manageable length for a family outing.

There are four screenings to choose from across two weeks, so you can pick the one that fits your schedule best. The first two are back-to-back: Wednesday 29 July at 14:30 and Thursday 30 July at 11:00. Then it returns the following week on Wednesday 4 August at 14:30 and Thursday 5 August at 11:00. If you're taking the kids, those morning and mid-afternoon slots make it easy to get home in time for tea.

It's not just the film, either. Before each screening, there are free Shrek colouring sessions for the kids to get stuck into. And on Thursday 30 July, there's a bath-bomb making workshop run in collaboration with LUSH, so that one is a double-header if you're after something more than just the movie. The cinema itself is run by a small team of staff and volunteers, and they've set things up to be relaxed: the volume is kept lower than usual and the house lights stay partially on, which makes it a good shout for families, neurodivergent viewers or anyone who finds a dark, loud cinema a bit much.
