Plymouth Boat Trips are running a Royal William Yard History Cruise from Royal William Yard Marina on Friday 4 September, from 18:00 to 20:00. It's a two-hour voyage around Plymouth Sound, and the whole thing is built for seeing the area's heritage and naval past from the water rather than from the land.
The trip is led by Plymouth historian Chris Robinson, who provides the commentary as you go. He threads the story of Britain through its relationship with the sea, starting with the creation of Royal William Yard as a great victualling hub—the place that supplied the Royal Navy with food and drink—and moving on to Plymouth's rise as a naval powerhouse. From there, he takes in the city's later chapters of global trade, exploration and industry, so you get the wider picture of how this part of the coast fits into the country's maritime history.
Because you're on the water, you see the waterfront as it was meant to be viewed, with the dramatic coastline and the naval architecture coming into view as you sail. It's a different way of experiencing the Yard than just walking around it, and Robinson's commentary puts the buildings and the shoreline into their proper context.
