Stitch and Splodge are running Little Stitches, a sewing workshop for children, on Monday 24 August in Plymouth. It's a two-hour session where the kids make two things: a notebook cover and a string of bunting. If you've got a young one who likes making things, it's a decent way to spend a Monday morning or afternoon during the summer break.
The workshop is led by Louise, an experienced food and textile teacher and crafter who runs the sessions at Stitch and Splodge. She describes her passion for crafting as infectious, and says it leaves learners feeling a sense of achievement, calm and inspired. That's the kind of thing you want when you're introducing a child to sewing — a relaxed environment where they can get stuck in without feeling overwhelmed, and come away with something they've actually made themselves.
As for what they'll be doing, the two projects cover a bit of ground. A notebook cover is a practical thing they can actually use, and a string of bunting is a classic sewing project that's as much about the process as the result. Between the two, they'll get a feel for the basics of working with fabric and thread, and they'll leave with two finished pieces to show for it. It's a good fit for a child who's never touched a needle before, or one who's already a bit handy and wants to make something a bit more substantial than a simple stitch.
