Ralph Nel is running a six-part life drawing course at The Box on Tavistock Place, with sessions on Fridays from 14:00 to 16:00. The dates are 3 July, 7 August, 4 September, 2 October, 6 November and 4 December 2026, so it's a long-haul commitment rather than a one-off afternoon. It's for adults only, and materials are provided, though you're welcome to bring your own if you have a particular set you prefer.
Nel is a Plymouth-based artist and drawing teacher with more than ten years of experience. He specialises in historical drawing methods and a wide range of techniques, and he works from the conviction that anyone can draw, framing learning as a continuous journey rather than a destination. That's a good thing to keep in mind if you're coming to this as a complete beginner — the whole thing is built as a step-by-step progression. You'll start by mapping out the figure, then break it down into basic shapes and negative space, move on to units of measurement, and then into refinement, before finishing with a long-form pose.
Beyond this six-session programme, Nel also runs stand-alone life drawing sessions at The Box, which he describes as flexible, open-ended hours that support exploration, practice and individual development at each artist's own pace.
