Larry Achiampong presents his new film Relic 4 and the Pan African Flags series at KARST, exploring themes of colonisation and identity.
Larry Achiampong brings Relic 4 to KARST in Millbay, running from 16 October to 12 December. It's a show of moving image and textiles, and it's joined by the ongoing series Pan African Flags For The Relic Travellers' Alliance.
Relic 4 is a return to the cinematic universe of the Relic Traveller project, which Achiampong is revisiting after a six-year hiatus. The series is set in an alternate reality and follows 'Voyagers' who use time-travel technology to retrieve testimonies from people oppressed by colonisation, capitalism and globalisation. This particular instalment brings back the original Voyager character first seen in Relic 1 (2017), played by the artist's son, Sinai Lee Achiampong-Rose, and takes him to sites of historical significance like Tilbury Fort and the Port of Tilbury. The show also works through the decade-long legacy of Brexit.
Achiampong himself was born in London in 1984 and is a British-born Ghanaian artist living and working in Essex. He works across film, still imagery, sound, performance and game design, and his practice engages with class, gender, cross-cultural and digital identity, as well as the residues of colonisation. Relic 4 is supported by the British Council.

KARST is at 22 George Place, Millbay, PL1 3NY. The opening is on Thursday 15 October, 6-9pm, and the show runs from 16 October to 12 December. Opening times are Wednesday to Saturday, 11am to 5pm, and it's closed Sunday to Tuesday.
