Hidden Tides: Mapping the Sea Within the City

Hidden Tides: Mapping the Sea Within the City is a creative writing workshop taking place at the Mills Bakery Building in Royal William Yard on Sunday 20 September. It's led by Dr Rosemarie Corlett, who was Plymouth's Poet Laureate from 2023 to 2025 and teaches English at Plymouth City College. Her debut poetry collection, Flightless Bird, came out through Shearsman Books in 2022, and she runs participatory literature projects that bring writing, place and community together.

The session grows out of Intertidal, a commission by artist David Cotterrell for Sea for Yourself, Plymouth Culture's programme connecting people with Plymouth Sound National Marine Park through creativity. It starts from the idea that the boundary between land and sea is more porous than we think, and invites you to find the sea in everyday places around Plymouth — a street that floods at high tide, a hidden river, a ferry crossing — through playful writing exercises. Sentences, memories, drawings and poems then feed a collective map of the sea in the city.

It's free to attend, so you don't need to worry about the cost. The workshop runs from 10:30 to 12:00 on the morning of Sunday 20 September at the Mills Bakery Building, 4 Royal William Road, Royal William Yard, PL1 3GD — the entrance is opposite the green.
