Fiddlers - Irene Duval plays solo violin

Irene Duval plays solo violin at Paradise Road on Sunday 13 September, from 15:00 to 17:00. It's a solo recital, so it's just her and the violin on stage for the full two hours.

She's built the programme around a selection of solo violin music, and the range of it is quite something. You'll hear Bach, Paganini, Tavener and Ysaÿe. That's a fair bit of ground to cover in one afternoon: Bach brings the structured, Baroque side of things; Paganini is the high-wire virtuosity; Tavener is the stillness and the spiritual; and Ysaÿe sits somewhere in between, writing for the violin as a solo voice. Hearing them all back-to-back gives you a good sense of how different the instrument can sound depending on who's writing for it.

Duval is a rising star on the violin, and she's not a stranger to the local scene — she's performed recently with the Plymouth Symphony Orchestra, so if you've caught her there, this is a different way of seeing her. In the orchestra, she's part of a larger sound; here, she's the whole thing. It's a curated set, so she's chosen these pieces to sit together rather than just playing through a standard repertoire.
