Creative climate cafés at The Box, Plymouth, using hands-on activities to spark conversation about the climate crisis.
The Box is hosting a series of Climate Cafés this August, with sessions on Thursday 13, Thursday 20, and Thursday 27. They run from 2pm to 4pm, so they're afternoon things rather than evening ones. They're open to young people aged 12 to 24, and you don't need any previous knowledge of climate change or any artistic experience to take part.
If you've never come across them, Climate Cafés are part of a global movement that sets up safe, community-centred spaces where people can talk openly about the climate crisis. They're led by the Climate Psychology Alliance and the youth movement Force of Nature, and they start from the recognition that many children and young people are already experiencing the impacts of climate change and thinking about the future. The idea is to have a place to voice those things rather than keeping them to yourself.
Each session here draws on one of the core themes of Echoes of Us, the exhibition currently on at The Box: Memory, Belonging and Connection. They use hands-on creative activities to spark conversation, share stories and imagine hopeful futures, so it's as much about making something as it is about talking. Because they're tied to the exhibition, the sessions pull from the same ideas running through the galleries.
