Artober Exhibition

Artober returns to Royal William Yard from Friday 23 October to Sunday 1 November, with the exhibition taking over Melville Corner. It's the third year the Yard has run its own exhibition, and it sits as the centrepiece of a wider Artober festival that turns the estate into Plymouth's autumn home for contemporary art. The whole thing runs as part of Plymouth Art Weekender, the city-wide celebration of the independent creative scene that's been going since 2015.

The exhibition brings together locally and nationally recognised artists working across a broad range of styles: contemporary art, large-scale oil portraits, landscape photography, printmaking, mixed media and interactive installation. It's not a static show, either. Some artists are in residence for the full run while others put on shorter pop-up displays, so the hanging evolves as the days go by. Visitors are invited to watch the artists at work, too, which gives you a look at how the pieces come together rather than just seeing the finished thing on the wall.

Beyond the main exhibition, the festival includes an Affordable Art Market with original work priced from £25 and capped at £500, a community exhibition brought together by the homelessness charity Path, and a full programme of workshops for all ages. It's a good spread if you're looking for something to take home or want to get stuck in yourself.

Melville Corner is open 11am to 4pm daily from 23 October to 1 November. Entry is free and no booking is required.
