Evening art workshops inspired by Gillian Ayres and the Echoes of Us exhibition, hosted by local artist Jayne Ashenbury.
The Box is running a series of evening art workshops this August called Messy Play for Grown Ups, hosted by Plymouth artist Jayne Ashenbury. They run on Friday evenings from 6pm to 8pm on the 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th of August, so you can drop in for one or come along to all four.
The whole thing is built around abstract making rather than a finished result, which is the point: it's about getting stuck in and making a mess. You'll work with a range of materials across the sessions — acrylics, charcoal, watercolours, chalk and pastels — and you take home your own 'masterpiece' at the end. The workshops draw on the abstract work of Gillian Ayres and the art on display in The Box's Echoes of Us exhibition, so there's plenty to look at around you while you work.
Your host is local artist Jayne Ashenbury, who rediscovered her love of painting during lockdown after finding a box of watercolour paints in a drawer. She studied art and drama and spent twenty years teaching at Plymouth College before turning to her own practice of large bespoke murals, watercolour drawings and printed velvet cushions. These sessions are part of The Box's Summer of Expression programme, which also includes artist talks and music throughout the summer.

Tickets are £25, and that includes a glass of Pimm's or fruit punch to keep you going while you paint. The workshops run 6-8pm on Friday evenings, 7, 14, 21 and 28 August, at The Box, Tavistock Place, Plymouth, PL4 8AX.
