Alhambra Inspirations

The Katona Twins bring Alhambra Inspirations to Methodist Central Hall on Saturday 4 July, a programme of Spanish music for two guitars. The title refers to the Alhambra Palace in Granada and its sun-drenched gardens, and the set stays firmly in that territory. It opens with Albeniz's Asturias for two guitars, then moves into Tarrega's Double Concerto — the Gran Vals, Alhambra Inspiration and Capricho Arabe. Granados's Oriental follows, then Scarlatti's Double Concerto with its Allegro, Aria and Scarlatti's Metamorphosis. The second half brings Albeniz's Mallorca, Boccherini's Introduction & Fandango and Turina's La Oracion del Torero.

The performers are identical twins Peter and Zoltán Katona. They're known for a style that blends classical, flamenco and finger-picking techniques, and for a stage presence more in line with lead guitarists than traditional classical players. The New Yorker once described it as an "eerie unanimity of style and considerable charm".

They've played Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall and The Concertgebouw, and have worked with Yo-Yo Ma and the BBC Concert Orchestra. Over their career they've won more than ten international prizes and released 11 CDs, with recordings appearing in the TV series Fargo and a Broadway show starring Hugh Jackman. In 2009, they performed live to half a million people in arenas across Europe as classical soloists for Night of the Proms.
