Traditional music ensemble Devilish Merry blends Appalachian and Irish melodies with ballad-based songs about American history and heritage.
Devilish Merry play Alphabet City on Wednesday, November 11, from 7 to 8:30 PM. The show is presented by City of Asylum.
Devilish Merry is a traditional music ensemble from Pittsburgh that blends Appalachian and Irish melodies with ballad-based songs about American history and heritage. Their repertoire mixes old-time fiddle tunes, Irish jigs and reels, and Pennsylvania folk and labor ballads with new songs drawn from the musicians' own life experience. Their all-new compositions take in the work of artists like Henry Threadgill, Anthony Braxton, John Zorn, and the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians.
Over the last four decades, they've played in a wide range of settings—museums, schools, coffee houses, bars, parks, malls, hospitals, farmers markets, and Civil War battlegrounds—reaching close to a million people. The lineup for this show includes Burr Beard on hammered dulcimer and vocals, Jeff Berman on lap dulcimer and percussion, Sue Powers on banjo and songs, Jan Hamilton on fiddle, L.E. McCullough on tin whistle, flute, and bones, Heather Gilmer on fiddle, and Kip Ruefle on bodhran.
