Session on the intersection of sustainability and wellness with snacks and crafts, including the 'Natural Connections Upcycle Leash Project' that turns climbing ropes into dog leashes.
Wellness Wednesday is happening at the William Pitt Union on Wednesday, October 21, from 9 AM to 11 PM. It's run by the Student Office of Sustainability (SOOS), and the whole day is built around the intersection of sustainability and wellness. If you're around, you can drop in, grab some snacks, and work on a few crafts while picking up some info on how the two things overlap.
One of the main things they're doing is the Natural Connections Upcycle Leash Project, a collaboration between the SOOS and Recreation and Wellness. They take old climbing ropes and repurpose them into durable, handmade dog leashes and toys, which they then donate to local animal shelters and rescue organizations. It's a straightforward way to see a piece of gear that's reached the end of its life get a second use instead of heading for a landfill.
The day is part of Campus Sustainability Month, which runs throughout October. The month was created by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) to celebrate sustainability achievements in higher education and raise awareness of sustainable initiatives. The SOOS itself is part of Pitt's Office of Sustainability, and they describe their work as balancing equity, environment, and economics to lead university-wide sustainability strategy, activities, policies, and partnerships.

For a bit of context on what that looks like in practice: in fiscal year 2024, the campus diverted 49% of its materials to recycling or reuse, and the BioForge building earned LEED Platinum certification. You'll find the event in room 510 of the William Pitt Union, 3959 Fifth Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15260, open from 9 AM to 11 PM.
