Jazz quartet Mila Shadel Quartet, led by saxophonist Lou Stellute, plays original arrangements of Joni Mitchell's music in the Thursday Night Jazz series.
Mila Shadel brings her own arrangements of Joni Mitchell's music to Alphabet City on Thursday, December 3, as part of the Thursday Night Jazz series. Shadel is a Pittsburgh native and lifelong guitarist who describes Mitchell as one of her musical heroes, and she's drawn to the way Mitchell's sound shifted fluidly between folk and jazz.
For this set, she's performing with the Mila Shadel Quartet. The group is led by saxophonist Lou Stellute, with saxophonists Scott Boni and Ben Opie and rhythm section Paul Thompson and George Heid III. It's a substantial lineup for a jazz date, with three horns on stage to work through Mitchell's songs.
Shadel picked up the guitar at age 10 and studied jazz guitar performance at Duquesne University, and she's played alongside many of the city's best jazz musicians since. Her usual shows lean on a classic jazz guitar trio sound, drawing from the discographies of George Benson, Wes Montgomery, Pat Martino, Pat Metheny and Emily Remler, as well as her own compositions. This particular evening, however, centers on her arrangements of Mitchell's catalog.
