A raucous mash-up of Pittsburgh's greatest tales of the unexplained, from Westinghouse's supernatural investigations to figures like Carnegie, Heinz and Nikola Tesla.
The Haunted Pittsburgh Players bring The Haunted Pierogi to the Kelly Strayhorn Theater on Saturday, October 17, at 7:30 PM. It's a mash-up of Pittsburgh's greatest tales of the unexplained, and the whole thing is built around a pretty specific piece of local lore.
The show is set in the Gilded Age—the era of ragtime, robber barons, and gaslit mansions—and it centers on George Westinghouse. The story goes that Westinghouse, at great personal risk, conducted an investigation into supernatural phenomena across the region, then threw his findings into the fire and never spoke of them again. The Haunted Pittsburgh Players claim to have recovered that charred manuscript and are bringing those stories back to life on stage. The result is what they bill as a hilarious, raucous mash-up of the city's most famous unexplained tales.
That means you'll see some of the biggest names in Pittsburgh history pop up in places you wouldn't expect. Andrew Carnegie, H.J. Heinz, Henry Clay Frick, and Nikola Tesla all make an appearance, and the list doesn't stop there—even Jack the Ripper shows up. It's a strange crowd to have sharing a stage, and the whole thing is played for laughs rather than scares.
