The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jacob Joyce, performs John Williams' score live to the film for the 50th anniversary of Star Wars: A New Hope.
The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is bringing Star Wars: A New Hope to PPG Paints Arena on Tuesday, May 25, 2027, at 7 PM. It's a live-to-picture screening, so the orchestra performs John Williams' original score in real time while the film plays on the arena's four-sided videoboard, backed by two 360-degree LED rings and full arena amplification. The night marks the 50th anniversary of the film's release.
Associate Conductor Jacob Joyce leads the PSO for this one, and the program is the full score from the 1977 original. Williams won an Oscar for it, and he went on to score all nine films in the saga, picking up nominations for The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker. Joyce describes the soundtrack as one of the best ever composed and the night as a one-of-a-kind event.
There's a bit of local history to the booking, too. This is the PSO's first appearance at PPG Paints Arena since relocating from Heinz Hall, and original Heinz Hall ticket holders get priority seating. The concert is part of UPMC Movies with the PSO, the orchestra's film-with-live-orchestra series licensed by Disney Concerts.
