The Pittsburgh Philharmonic opens its 51st season with 'Splendor Unbound', pairing Wagner's Meistersinger Prelude with Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 and the Pittsburgh premiere of Coleridge-Taylor's Solemn Prelude.
The Pittsburgh Philharmonic opens its 51st season with Splendor Unbound at The Greater Pittsburgh Masonic Center on Sunday, October 18. It's the first concert of their new season, and the program puts a familiar German staple alongside a piece that's getting its Pittsburgh premiere.
The evening starts with the Meistersinger Prelude by Richard Wagner, a piece most of us have heard before. From there, the orchestra moves into Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's Solemn Prelude, a rediscovered work that's being heard in the city for the first time. The second half is Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5, a full-scale symphony that carries the program through to the end.

That pairing is the point of the whole thing: a staple of the German repertoire sitting next to a work that's new to Pittsburgh. The Philharmonic is marking its 51st season with this, so it's a bit of a kickoff for the year ahead. The concert runs from 4 PM to 6 PM at the Masonic Center, 3579 Masonic Way, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15237. Tickets are $15 to $20.
