Concert by Shaheed Rucker at the August Wilson African American Cultural Center on Liberty Avenue.
Shaheed Rucker is playing the August Wilson African American Cultural Center this Friday, October 23. It's part of a longer run at the center that opened on Thursday, September 3, and continues through Sunday, November 1, so if you can't make this specific date, there are other chances to catch him throughout the fall.
For those who haven't seen him live, Rucker is a guitarist and composer whose work sits in that intersection of jazz, soul, and gospel. He's known for a style that's as much about the space between the notes as the ones he actually plays, and he's spent years building a name for himself around that kind of thoughtful, melodic approach. The set is built around his own compositions, and he's the sole name on the bill, so the whole evening is focused on his playing.
The venue is the August Wilson African American Cultural Center at 980 Liberty Avenue in downtown Pittsburgh. It's a space dedicated to the legacy of August Wilson, and it's one of the city's primary homes for Black art and performance. Rucker's music fits right in there—rooted in the Black American tradition but always pushing it forward into something new.
