An improvised fantasy adventure in which a troupe of improv actors throws modern-day characters into Shakespearean chaos.
Rough Magic opens at Arcade Comedy Theater on Friday, October 23, and runs through November 20. It's an improvised fantasy adventure where a troupe of merry vagabonds throws modern-day characters into Shakespearean chaos—think witches making prophecies, wizards conjuring tempests, and fairies dispensing love potions. Since it's improv, the story is built on the fly, so no two nights will be the same.
The cast is a ten-person ensemble: Aaron Crutchfield, Cassie Pfannenstiel, Dave Sinneway, Hank McAnallen, Jon Hartwell, Karen White, Lily Grbach, Marta Napoleone Mazzoni, Philip Mazzoni, and Sarah Schultz. Connor McCanlus is coaching and co-directing, and Will Snavely is producing and co-directing.
Arcade Comedy Theater is downtown Pittsburgh's home for live comedy, and they've been putting on improv, stand-up, and sketch every Friday and Saturday night, with Sunday jams on top, since 2013. The venue is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts organization founded by Kathryn Spitz Cohan, the longtime executive director of Film Pittsburgh, who also serves as its executive director. Beyond the stage, they run comedy classes year-round.
