Quantum Theatre's found-space production of Liza Birkenmeier's gothic suspense play 'radio island', with director Katie Brook.
Quantum Theatre is back with radio island, running from Friday, October 23 through Sunday, November 15 at Rockwell Park in Point Breeze. It's a 120-minute gothic suspense story by Liza Birkenmeier, and it's being staged in a found space—concrete walls and exposed rebar—at 7514 Thomas Blvd.
The play follows a hostage negotiator who's adjusting to life as a caregiver in her childhood home. Birkenmeier wrote it in isolation, and she developed it alongside director Katie Brook back in 2017 and 2018, just before the pandemic. It's a long piece, two full hours, and the setting—that raw, concrete space—is part of the experience.
This production also marks a turning point for the company. Karla Boos, who's been Quantum's artistic director since she founded it in 1990, announced her retirement ahead of the 2026 season. She's staying on to oversee things through the end of the year, and Katie Brook is set to take over in 2027. Brook earned her MFA in directing from Carnegie Mellon University in 2012, so she's coming to the role with a local connection.
