Free concert by the University of Pittsburgh's African Music and Dance Ensemble, combining drumming, voice and dance from across Africa.
The Pitt African Music and Dance Ensemble takes the stage at Bellefield Hall on Thursday, December 3, for their Fall 2026 concert. The performance is presented by the University of Pittsburgh's Department of Music, and it's a good chance to see the ensemble in person if you've only heard about them around campus.
The ensemble specializes in music and dance from across Africa, and the concert brings that together on one stage. It's not just a musical performance; the group works with drumming, voice, dance, and other musical and visual art forms to build what they describe as a unique African theatrical experience. The drumming is a central part of the sound, and the dance is just as much a part of the show as the music. If you're interested in how those elements fit together, this is exactly the kind of thing they do.
Beyond the stage, the ensemble also introduces students to various techniques of drumming, dancing, and other African artistic expressions. That teaching side informs the performance, so what you'll see is rooted in those specific traditions. The concert draws from that work, bringing together the drumming, the voice, and the dance into a single evening.
