Hands-on textile mending workshop on button replacement, darning, sweater stitch and buttonholes, with all supplies provided.
Old Flame Mending is hosting Mending 102 at Carnegie Library Woods Run on Wednesday, October 28, from 5 PM to 7:30 PM. It's a hands-on sewing and textile repair workshop that picks up where the basics leave off. The session focuses on a few specific techniques: lace repair, darning, the sweater stitch, and buttonholes. If you've got a favorite sweater with a hole or a piece of lace that's starting to fray, this is the kind of class where you actually bring that item and work on it.
Old Flame Mending runs these kinds of workshops around the city, and they're all about repairing and preserving the clothes you already own. Their sessions cover the basics—replacing buttons, sewing up seams, fixing tears, and patching—and then move into more advanced territory like darning, blanket stitch, and buttonholes. They also teach sashiko, the traditional Japanese art of visible mending that's as much about decoration as it is about function. For those who want to go beyond repair, their resident embroiderer Meg Prall teaches hand embroidery. Staff member Wendy is on hand for mending support and instruction, and the organization often partners with local eateries like Mandu Handu for their Mend + Meal events.
