Screening of Ken Russell's 1971 film 'The Devils' in its uncut theatrical version, presented in a 4K restoration at The Harris Theater.
The Harris Theater is screening Ken Russell's The Devils (1971) on Thursday, October 29. It's the uncut, unfiltered theatrical version starring Oliver Reed and Vanessa Redgrave, presented in a 4K restoration—the first time the film has been shown in 4K.
For those who haven't seen it, The Devils is one of Russell's most notorious works, a historical drama about a 17th-century priest in Loudun, France, whose life unravels when a group of nuns claims to be possessed by demons. It's a film that has spent decades as a fragmented thing, with different versions and cuts circulating in different territories, so seeing the uncut theatrical version is a specific draw. The 4K restoration brings it back to the big screen in a way it hasn't been seen in years.
The venue is The Harris Theater, part of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust at 809 Liberty Avenue. It's one of the most active arts facilities in the region, showing art films nearly every day of the year. It was the first movie house in Pittsburgh to commercially show art movies, before it became an adult movie house in the 1960s. The Cultural Trust bought and restored it as part of the city's Cultural District, and it reopened on November 9, 1995, named through a gift from the Buhl Foundation after John P. Harris, a co-founder of the Nickelodeon—the first theater solely dedicated to motion pictures. Today it bills contemporary, foreign, and classic films, and The Devils is the latest to come through in 4K.
