Exhibition by the AAPI artist collective JADED exploring layered identities, dreams, grief and connection through painting, sculpture, sound, film, wood, glass and textiles.
JADED opens Remind Me, My Dream at Kelly Strayhorn Theater on Friday, October 23, with an opening reception from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. The exhibition runs through Friday, December 18, and brings together seventeen AAPI artists working in painting, sculpture, sound, film, wood, glass, and textiles. It's curated by Sara Tang.
JADED is Pittsburgh's first AAPI artist collective, led by women and non-binary artists and devoted to celebrating AAPI art and culture in the city. Remind Me, My Dream draws on the artists' layered identities and personal histories, with the different media coming together around dreams, grief, and connection. The seventeen artists involved are Arieux, Anne Chen, Shimul Chowdhury, Sara Dtantirojanarat, Eriko Hattori, Sarah Khadraoui, Kiyomi Knox, Jules Lee, Justin Lin, Arthur Lindsay, Brent Nakamoto, Quartz/Court, Kimberly Rooney 高小荣, SEONI, Becky Sungja Kim, Zim Syed, and Zoyakeko.
The opening reception adds two immersive experiences to the night. Artist Kiyomi Knox leads a Kintsugi Grief Bowls workshop, based on the Japanese practice of repairing broken pottery with gold to symbolize beauty in brokenness. Performing artist Arieux presents a procession inspired by the ancient Chinese profession of corpse walkers. The show was commissioned by Kelly Strayhorn Theater in conjunction with Maree ReMalia's WITH OURSELVES, WITH EACH OTHER.
