Immersive audio installation and listening environment by Hprizm, the moniker of Kyle Austin, with new recordings and sculptural works at Wood Street Galleries.
Hprizm is showing Sound of the City at Wood Street Galleries, 601 Wood Street, through Sunday, January 31. It's an immersive audio installation and listening environment by Kyle Austin, who works under the name Hprizm. The piece originally premiered at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn, but it's been expanded for this run with new recordings and sculptural works.
Austin built the sound from audio he captured while traversing New York City and western Pennsylvania. He weaves soul records, the echoes of NYCHA tiles, and the grind of steel factories into tape loops and Ableton Live, so the city's own noise becomes the material. The sculptural elements that accompany the sound give you a physical space to sit with it rather than just passing through.
Austin's background explains where this comes from. He's an American avant-garde artist and composer whose practice spans performance art, pop music, and multimedia, rooted in the Lower East Side experimental arts scene of the early 1990s. He was a founding member of the hip-hop collective Antipop Consortium and is a cited figure in the Afrofuturist canon, having shared stages with The Roots, Radiohead, MF Doom, DJ Shadow, Matthew Shipp, Vijay Iyer, and Steve Lehman. His work has been shown at the Whitney, the Guggenheim, MoMA PS1, the New Museum, the Walker Museum, SXSW, and CalArts. He's also the creative director of PRIZMLABS.
