Screening of the 1958 Hammer Films classic 'Horror of Dracula' in a new 4K restoration with recovered footage.
Horror of Dracula (1958) opens at The Harris Theater on Wednesday, October 28, and runs through Saturday, October 31. It's a new 4K restoration of the Hammer Films classic, arriving just in time for Halloween.
This isn't just a clean-up of the original. Hammer Films and Silver Salt Restoration worked with Warner Bros to restore the film in 4K, and the process brought back footage that had been missing for more than six decades. If you've seen the movie before, there's actually new material to catch here—scenes that were cut or lost for over sixty years are back in their original place.
The Harris Theater is a good fit for a screening like this. It's one of the few theaters in the city that still regularly runs 35mm film projectors, and it's known for showing contemporary, foreign, and classic films nearly every day of the year. The theater itself has a bit of a story: it was the first moving picture house in Pittsburgh to commercially show art movies, before it became an adult movie house in the 1960s. The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust later bought and restored it, reopening to the public on November 9, 1995, with 194 seats and a fully restored balcony. It was named through a gift from the Buhl Foundation after John P. Harris, a co-founder of the Nickelodeon.
