World premiere of Matt Schatz's play about a novelist who turns to a chatbot for writing help and what follows.
City Theatre is bringing Bobby Robotowitz to its Main Stage in Pittsburgh from January 23 through February 14, 2027. It's a world premiere by playwright Matt Schatz, directed by Jared Mezzocchi, and it's being staged as an NNPN Rolling World Premiere co-produced with Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in Washington, D.C. That means the show starts here in Pittsburgh before moving on to its collaborative run.
Schatz describes the play as a witty and imaginative take on the consequences of evolving artificial intelligence. The story follows a novelist and mother who turns to a chatbot for help with her writing; what starts as a few grammar tips soon spirals into chaos. It's a setup that's easy to recognize—most of us have used a chatbot for something small—but the play takes it from there into something sharp, darkly funny, and full of creativity. The title itself, Bobby Robotowitz, points toward the kind of character-driven comedy you can expect.

Because it's a world premiere, this is the first time the play is being seen on stage. The production is a collaboration between City Theatre and Woolly Mammoth, and the run stretches across three weeks, from January 23 to February 14, so you've got plenty of dates to choose from. It's part of City Theatre's 2026–2027 season, and it's playing on the Main Stage.
