Candlelight ballet of Sleeping Beauty in which dancers in illuminated, phosphorescent costumes bring the princess's awakening to life.
Ballet of Lights brings Sleeping Beauty to the Kelly Strayhorn Theater on Saturday, Dec 5, 2026, with two showtimes: 4 PM and 6 PM. It's the first of three Pittsburgh dates, with the others following on Saturday, Jan 16, 2027, and Saturday, Feb 27, 2027, both also at 4 PM and 6 PM.
This isn't a traditional ballet. The dancers wear illuminated, phosphorescent costumes that respond to every movement, so the light shifts as they dance. The performance follows the princess's journey from an enchanted sleep to a magical awakening, set to a soundtrack of classical composers. The whole thing runs about 60 minutes, which makes it an easy one to bring kids to.
The venue is the Kelly Strayhorn Theater at 5941 Penn Avenue in East Liberty, a historic landmark housed in a restored 1914 vaudeville house. Seating is first-come, first-served across zones A through D, so if you have a preference for where you sit, you'll want to arrive early. The show is recommended for ages 5 and up, and children under 16 need to be accompanied by an adult.
