Four-part academic conversation series on global power dynamics and transatlantic ties, with each session followed by bagels.
Bagels and Conversations: What is going on out there? kicks off at Wesley W. Posvar Hall on Thursday, October 22, and runs for four weeks. It's a transatlantic conversation about global power dynamics and what they mean for the ties between North America and Europe, put on by the University of Pittsburgh's European Studies Center and the Department of Political Science together with the UniversitĆ degli Studi di Bari in Italy. The whole thing actually follows a class Professor Raffaella Patimo is teaching in Bari, and the series spreads that conversation across the Atlantic.
Over the four sessions, the speakers trace the shifting global power structure, with each meeting devoted to a different thread. The first looks at the global setting of power dynamics; the second focuses on Europe as a global actor; the third covers Russia and China as assertive powers; and the fourth examines the impact of the Trump effect on institutions, NATO, and international conflict. It's a broad sweep of the current geopolitical landscape, and you can drop in for the specific topics that interest you or follow the whole arc from start to finish.
The conversation is led by Professor Raffaella Patimo from the UniversitĆ degli Studi di Bari, Professor Ron Linden from the Department of Political Science, and Professor Randall Halle from the European Studies Center. The sessions run on Thursday mornings from 8:30 to 9:30 AM on October 22 and 29, and November 5 and 12. Bagels are served.
