Visual art gallery and poetry reading by Black Girl Absolute, with works for her upcoming book 'A Field Guide for Blue Girls'.
Black Girl Absolute brings A Wilder Flower to 460 Melwood Ave on Thursday, October 29, from 6 PM to 8 PM. It's a double-feature evening that pairs a visual art gallery with a poetry reading, both drawing on the work she's been developing for her upcoming book, A Field Guide for Blue Girls.
If you're not familiar with the name, Black Girl Absolute is an artist and poet born and raised just east of Pittsburgh. Her work sits at the intersection of mental health, Blackness, and femininity in America, and she works across a few different mediums to get there: acrylics, tufting, and laser cutting. Seeing the gallery and hearing the reading in one night gives you a look at how those two sides of her practice—the visual and the written—feed into each other.
A Wilder Flower is a project supported by the Pittsburgh Foundation, and the material on display comes directly from the research and writing she's putting into A Field Guide for Blue Girls. Because the gallery and the reading happen together, you can walk through the art and then hear the poetry it's tied to, rather than just seeing one or the other.
