Undergraduate research symposium where teams from the Summer Experiences in Mathematical Sciences program present their projects.
The 2026 SEMS Symposium is coming to Porter Hall 100 on Wednesday, October 28, from 5:05 to 6:45 PM. It's the capstone of the Summer Experiences in Mathematical Sciences, an undergraduate research program run by the Department of Mathematical Sciences. Throughout the summer, students work on projects in teams, and this symposium is where they bring that work out into the open.
If you're not familiar with how it's set up, the teams present their research one after another. Each team gets 20 minutes to walk through what they've been working on, followed by five minutes for questions from the audience. It's a straightforward format: a presentation, a bit of Q&A, and then on to the next group. Since it runs from 5:05 to 6:45 PM, you'll see several different projects in one sitting.
The program itself is built around undergraduate research. These are students who spent their summer working in teams on mathematical projects, and the symposium is the public showcase of that work. Rather than a single lecture, it's a series of presentations, so you get to see a few different directions in one evening.
