Chamber music concert by Urban Nocturnes featuring works by Devienne, Ginastera, Bridge and Coleman.
Urban Nocturnes open the new season at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral on Sunday, October 18, from 4 PM to 6 PM. The ensemble has been the cathedral's resident chamber group since before their 2023-24 season, their eighth there, so this is home turf for them. The concert kicks off Music at Trinity's 2026-27 season, a run of eight concerts from October through May that covers chamber music, jazz, organ, classical guitar, and choral performances—most of them free.
On the program, the quintet pairs classical and living composers on the same bill. They'll play François Devienne's Flute Quartet in C Major, Alberto Ginastera's Impresiones de la Puna, Frank Bridge's Novelletten for string quartet, and Alistair Coleman's Broadacre City. The lineup is flutist Viviana, pianist Karen, violinist Christopher, violist Melita, and cellist Olga. They also frequently collaborate with guest musicians from The Phoenix Symphony, including concertmaster Steven Moeckel and associate principal cellist Bridget Pasker.
The cathedral itself is a 105-year-old landmark at First Avenue and Roosevelt in downtown Phoenix. This season brings a few firsts to its stage: the venue's first classical guitar concert and its first 'Jazz in the Cathedral' performance. Resident organist David Briggs, who is also an artist in residence at New York City's Cathedral of St. John the Divine, features in the season as well.
