A musical hybrid of the Grateful Dead and Steely Dan, blending structured arrangements with free-flowing improvisation.
Steely Dead play the Crescent Ballroom on Saturday, January 9, 2027. The name tells you exactly what they do: they're a musical hybrid of the Grateful Dead and Steely Dan. If you've spent any time with either band, you know they sit on opposite ends of the studio spectrum, and that's exactly where the band works. They take Steely Dan's structured, precise studio arrangements and run them through the Grateful Dead's free-flowing, melodic improvisation and song segues.
That mashup is the whole point. They don't just play the two catalogs side by side; they weave them together. One of their go-to examples is "Dealin' in the Years," which crosses the Grateful Dead's "Deal" with Steely Dan's "Reelin' in the Years." It's that kind of crossing—taking the tight, jazz-inflected lines of the Dan and letting them open up into the kind of jam the Dead were known for—that defines the set.
The band formed in Denver, Colorado, and consists of Dave Hebert, Matthew Hebert, Chris Sheldon, and Dylan Teifer. They're the ones behind the arrangements, blending the two sounds into a single show rather than a tribute to one or the other. If you're a fan of either, you'll recognize the songs, but you'll hear them in a way they weren't originally recorded.
