Concert by the Estonian duo Puuluup, who perform compositions on the traditional hiiu kannel bowed lyre with electronic effects.
Puuluup play the Musical Instrument Museum on Friday, February 5, 2027. They're an Estonian duo formed in 2014 by Ramo Teder and Marko Veisson, and they play their own compositions on the hiiu kannel, a traditional bowed lyre that was popular in Europe in the early Middle Ages but had all but disappeared by the 20th century. It's a rare instrument to see in the wild, let alone hear live in Phoenix.
What they do with it is the interesting part. They run the kannel's horsehair strings through effects pedals and loopers, pairing its mellow sound with electronically amplified echoes, knocks, creaks, and crackles. Sometimes they even invent a language of their own. The approach has won them several music awards in Estonia and took them to the Eurovision Song Contest finals; critics have called the result folk, contemporary, funny, and danceable. It's a strange combination—a medieval lyre meeting a pedalboard—and the two ends of it are both on full display.

The venue is as fitting as the bill. The Musical Instrument Museum is the world's largest music museum, a 200,000-square-foot facility that opened in April 2010 and houses more than 15,000 instruments from nearly 200 countries. The show takes place in its 299-seat concert theater, so you'll be close to the stage. The concert starts at 7:30 PM, and tickets run from $38.50 to $49.50, with members who give $500 or more annually getting 10% off.
