A free 60-minute outdoor performance of Hungarian pop-rock, poetry and folk songs by Crossroads Band SF, presented by the Hungarian Cultural Association of Phoenix.
Crossroads Band SF plays The Pavilion at Herberger Theater Center on Saturday, October 17, from 6 to 7 PM. The show is presented by the Hungarian Cultural Association of Phoenix, and it's part of the Performance Pop-Ups, a series of free, 60-minute outdoor presentations that make up the Herberger's Community Showcase.
That showcase is built around Arizona's local talent, bringing music, dance, theater and visual art into the center's outdoor spaces. The format is designed to be interactive and to engage people who live, work, study and visit downtown Phoenix, with the shows running on Saturday evenings from 6 to 7 PM. This season's lineup is billed as a showcase of the energy, artistry and many voices of the community, and it covers a wide range of styles: Diwali and Hungarian vocal showcases, Chicano music, Odissi dance, jazz, hip-hop and R&B.
Crossroads Band SF takes the Hungarian slot. Their set mixes Hungarian pop-rock covers, sung poetry and re-interpretations of Hungarian folk songs, with some of the poems recited in English between songs. It's a fairly broad look at the country's music, moving from the pop-rock side of things to folk and spoken word.
