A tribute concert exploring the music of John Lennon and Harry Nilsson, narrated by Brian Chartrand, exploring their 'Lost Weekend' period in Los Angeles.
Live from Laurel Canyon brings Lennon and Nilsson: Songs from the Lost Weekend to the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix on Saturday, December 26. It's a tribute concert that pairs two iconic songwriters, John Lennon and Harry Nilsson, and the whole thing is narrated by bandleader Brian Chartrand.
The show centers on a specific stretch of time: in 1973, years after the Beatles broke up, Lennon settled into Los Angeles and spent the next 18 months making music and mischief with his American pal, a period he later called "The Lost Weekend." The performance works through their individual catalogues, the impact they had on each other's work, the collaborations that came out of those months, and the stories that inspired them. It's staged by Live From Laurel Canyon, a project they describe as more than a tribute actβan evening of live music and storytelling devoted to the songwriters of the Laurel Canyon neighborhood, who between the mid-1960s and the late 1970s rewrote American popular music.
Brian Chartrand threads the night with multimedia projections and the stories behind the songs, connecting the music to the artists' lives, houses, feuds, and friendships. The band on stage is a full ensemble: Mario Mendivil on bass, Todd Chuba on drums, Brian Chartrand on vocals and guitar, Otto D'Agnolo on vocals and guitar taking on the Lennon role, Adam Armijo on electric guitar, and Lamar Gaines on keys. With two singers and a full rhythm section, it's a live band rather than a small acoustic set.
